My name is Mat. I like history & archaeology, traveling, fantasy and science fiction, table-top gaming, all things geeky like Star Wars and Doctor Who, and sandwiches. This is the blog where I talk about things that have happened, or are happening, or may happen, in my life. You know, for fun? Below are an assortment of random facts about me. Mat facts.
–I served 8 years in the U.S Navy and never once went to sea.
–I’ve climbed Mayan pyramids in Belize.
–I can play the guitar, the mandolin, and the Irish flute. Sometimes in that order.
–I can speak, read, and write Arabic.
–I love books. I own many. It’s a pain in the ass when I move.
–I recently started collecting coffee mugs, such as a Goonies mug, and one with a Tardis on it. It’s okay if you’re a little jealous. Don’t be. They sell them at Barnes & Noble.
–I like to write stories because my head is constantly filling up with them. I have to get them out somehow. So I’m writing a book…or five.
–I lived in Bahrain for 1 year. There I learned that Saudis love Thai hookers and Starbuck’s. Sometimes together.
–I once held a Top Secret security clearance. The things I’ve seen would shock you. Ready for it? There’s no aliens in the government.
–I’ve mountain biked in the rain forest in Panama and seen the Panama canal. It’s rusted.
–I drove from Pensacola, FL to Sacramento, CA in 2.5 days. Then I slept for 12 straight hours.
–I’m a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) currently in the Kingdom of the West.
–I am a proud nerd. I grew up playing D&D and Warcraft II, going to Renaissance Faires, miniature wargames, and reading fantasy novels. Not much has changed. In more recent years I’ve added a small Doctor Who obsession and board gaming to my nerd repertoire.
–I’ve pub crawled with the Irish on the streets of Dublin…and survived. I seem to remember starting a mosh pit.
–My favorite bands are Nightwish, Gaelic Storm, and Megadeth. That being said, I love heavy metal and celtic music. Odd enough combination?
–I love history, archaeology, world travel, and fantasy books. My heroes are Indiana Jones, Dirk Pitt, and Harry Dresden.
–Some of my favorite books are Inca Gold by Clive Cussler, The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks, To Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Timeline by Michael Crichton, The Queen of the Damned by Ann Rice, The Belgariad by David Eddings, Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling, and anything by Jim Butcher.
–I accidentally wandered into the red light district in Frankfurt. No really! It’s right by the train station. Those German pimps are aggressive…and dead sexy.
–I lived in Augusta, GA for six years and never once did someone tell me I had a pretty mouth or to “squeal like a pig”. Although, Georgia has more Waffle Houses and Baptist Churches that its population.
–I hate flying, despite me having crossed the Atlantic a dozen times. You will never catch me sky diving. Ever.
–Science is awesome. I’m not religious at all. In fact, I’m an athiest.
